Royal Blackwood or torrefied/thermally modified purpleheart is a sustainable tonewood used as a black alternative to ebony in lutherie. Through a controlled process of heat and pressure, the wood is permanently darkened all the way through, improving both its dimensional stability and overall strength. This transformation results in a deep black colour while preserving the natural grain and workability of the material. Unlike surface dyes, the color is consistent throughout the entire piece and remains unaffected by glue, moisture, or solvents.
